The Lost Thing

This is Not a Film Festival, is a semi-regular short film screening, hosted by 1000 Pound Bend (361 Little Lonsdale St).

Among the many lovely short films I’ve seen there was Shaun Tan’s Oscar-winning The Lost Thing.

Given it is based on a picture book by the author I figured it qualified, and I just wanted to mention one of the images that stayed with me. This beautiful, evocative film is set in a dystopic, monochrome, soulless cityscape.

In the background of one scene (above) there is a sculpture of two figures- one interviewing the other. One figure’s head has been replaced with a video camera, the other with a television. What a perfect symbol of the mindlessness of much modern journalism.

Definitely check out the full-length version – it is delightful.
